The prestigious HG Wells short-story competition began in 2009 with a bequest of £20,000 (held by the Sandgate Society) by the world-renowned BBC Aeronautics Correspondent Reg Turnill and his wife, Margaret, to celebrate the life and works of H G Wells and encourage creative writing, especially among the young. Originally restricted to the young people of Sandgate, Folkestone, Hythe and New Romney (H G Wells arrived in Sandgate from New Romney) as the competition has become more widely known, entries from all around the UK are now accepted.
The competition offers generous senior and junior prizes and free publication of all shortlisted entries in a quality, professionally published paperback anthology.
