The society takes an active role in reviewing and commenting on planning applications in Sandgate submitted to Folkestone & Hythe District Council, who are the planning authority, and considered by Sandgate Parish Council.

Planning applications are determined by reference to the following policies:

National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) (last updated July 2021) which sets out government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied.

Places and Policies Local Plan (PPLP) 2020 (Folkestone & Hythe District Council) which identifies small and medium sized sites for development across the district to meet the targets in the Core Strategy; as well as setting out detailed development management policies to assess planning applications.

Sandgate Design Statement 2020 (SDS), a joint document between Sandgate Parish Council and the Sandgate Society, which details a series of design principles to be used by developers and for planners to reference when considering individual planning applications in Sandgate. The SDS aims to ensure Sandgate village’s diverse building and landscape heritage is not compromised and any new developments and building alterations enhance this environment.

The Sandgate Design Statement is a ‘supplementary planning document’ and a ‘material consideration’ in considering planning applications within Sandgate.
