Sandgate Safari Sale: Sabina has a new dress!

Through the generosity of those who either bought from the stall or ‘Went up the Tower’ at Ullyett Cottage during the Sandgate Safari Sale, Sabina now has a new dress.

With the funds raised Commat (the Commonwealth Medical Trust) was able to buy a treadle sewing machine for the women in the remote village of Nkuringo, in Western Uganda and they have since been busy learning how to use it. They have made skirts for themselves and clothes for their children, and will now start making school uniforms for young children which can then be sold.

The women have also entertained tourists at one of the lodges in the area and have each been given a hen bought from the proceeds raised. The hens will provide eggs, with chicks being reared as well.

Do read the latest issue of the Gorilla gazette at NGOsBeyond2014.org/gorilla-gazette- newsletter. There will also be another one at the end of the month…

Thank you for your support Marianne (Haslegrave) gorillas@commat.org

SANDGATE SALE SAFARI

Is your garage full of lockdown clear outs?

Do you have bags of stuff cluttering up your house just waiting to find a good new home?

If the answer is YES then why not take part in the Sandgate Sale Safari on  Sunday 6th June, 11:00am – 4:00pm organised by the Sandgate Society, with money raised going towards supporting local community projects

You may have been to one of these before or know of them, but if you haven’t, they are basically a boot fair where people sell from their garages/front gardens etc with customers following a map to visit each site rather than walk around a field. It costs £5 to take part with the Sandgate Society organising/promoting the event and providing customers with a map of the sale locations.

If you live in Sandgate and would like a stall, please email   sandgatesociety@gmail.com with your name, full address and any additional information you would like on your listing, and we will then send you payment details.

Please support your local community by taking part in this fun event and spreading the word – the more stalls the better! If you don’t think you have enough things to sell, why not team up with a neighbour?

Community Wall of Fame

These are challenging times but it is heartening to hear more and more stories of people stepping up to help others in so many different ways.

The Sandgate Society is therefore seeking nominations for those people who you feel have enriched our local community with their selfless actions.

The society would like to acknowledge those people by entering them on the Wall of Fame which will be displayed from time to time in differing prominent locations in the village (and on our website and social media pages).

As a token of appreciation for each of those shown on our Wall of Fame, the Sandgate Society, on behalf of our community, will donate a small gift to each nominee.

Please email sandgatesociety@gmail.com your nomination with brief details of their activity, or drop a letter into either the Old Fire Station or the Sandgate Library and a member of the Sandgate Society team will contact you for further details as required.

Events have had to postponed but our Lockdown Photographic Competition attracted some great images including the winner by Joe Bleach, pictured left, on the spot where he took his stunning photo.

Photographic competition 2020

Now we are allowed a bit more freedom, we wonder if you were able to help us?

These may be very difficult times, but we are living through history –the history of Sandgate.

The Committee and Archives Team feel it is important that this period is recorded for posterity with as many photographs as possible to record our village during this time.

Would you like to contribute to our effort and send in some photographs – rainbows in windows, deserted streets, closed shops, social distance street parties, people singing from balconies, Thursday night clapping for the NHS – whatever you can find?

So we can share them, we will publish them on our website and will have a People’s Vote on the best one.  The winning photograph could be enlarged onto canvas and hung in a public place – maybe the Chichester Hall, the Library or the Old Fire Station.

And if we had enough photos, we could even consider a calendar, maybe notelets – who knows where this may lead?

Please let us know if you would like to join our effort to record history for future Sandgate generations, and have a bit of fun at the same time?

Please send them in jpeg format to sandgatesociety@gmail.com.   We will aim to put 1 or 2 photos on the Photo Gallery from each contributor; if you wish to send in more, feel free, but we may need to use our editing rights to publish a limited number depending on the number received.

So, please get snapping and we look forward to Creating the Heritage of Sandgate together.

Best wishes
